Retention of JSB

hi there,

I am just enquiring on behalf of my husband. He is currently unemployed and in receipt of JSB. This is due to end after xmas and he will be means tested. I work full time, we have no children but he more than likely will not be entitled to any JSA because of my salary. He applied for some Postgraduate courses that were offered by the state but was not fortunate to get a place. If he had been offered a place he would have been entitled to hold onto his JSB payments until course ended....
Is it still possible for him to apply for other courses through fas or private colleges and he would be able to hold onto some of his JSB?

Any information would be appreciated.

I think you are talking about Back to Education Allownce? If the course is an apporved couse (HDip rather than a 'non-teaching' Postgrad qualification) and if the college is an accredited college, then he can get BTEA if doing it. Might be too late for this year as most course now started. If he does a FAS course, he will be paid the equivalent of SW rate while on the courtse and it would extend his entitlement to JB

hi there,
thanks for replying.
He was onto his swo today and she gave him the BTE form. He can do the accounting technician part-time over 2 years at night in IT Tallaght. Would this make him eligible? Most of part-time HDIP's are full for the year now. He would like to do part-time so that he can be availalble in case there was a miracle and he got a job back in Civil Eng.

If the above is not acceptable can he do fas course part-time or do course on E-College until next Sept when he apply for hdips etc.
Any advise would be great as it isvery hard to get talking to someone in SW that answer the phone.I no they are under extreme pressure the way things are gone.

much appreciated.

The BTEa is only payable for full-time courses. And if he studies part-time, he might knock himself out of entitlement to JB becuase he's not available for full-time work!

I think his best bet would be to go to the SWO again and ask for an appointment to see the Job Facilitator. They're very good at setting out his options and they don't have any agenda other than helping SW customers explore all possibilities of getting courses, work or education or whatever (i.e. they're not there to try and trip him up and save money by getting him off SW!) They might have something he hasn't thought of and they work closely with other agencies and course providers. He might have to make an appointment as they're very busy these days.

hi there,

thanks so much for your advise and steering us in the right direction. He is going back into SW tomorrow to see what his options are. He really needs to hold onto his JSB until he gets a job. But to get a job these days he has to upskill.Hopefully they will be able to sort somoething out for him.

Thanks again I let you know how he gets on.
