Hello All,

I am building a small (4 ft high) retaining wall in the back garden.
Its a concrete block with foundation structure.
I plan to back fill this wall with soil.

Any suggestions as to how I would coat/treat the wall BEFORE
i back fill to prevent moisture from coming through the wall
from the back-filled soil ?

Suggestions and experiences most welcome

If you put a land drain at the base of the retaining wall, on the side with the soil, it will carry away the water retained by the wall. The land drain should be connected to your surface water drainage.

I did something similiar a few years ago. Did as Joker538 said with landdrain pipe at base. Then put 1000 gauge plastic behind the wall to protect from water (can be gotten in any builders providers) then filled it with gravel to help with drainage.

My wall is about 5 feet above ground level. Was built using 4 inch blocks. First 3/4 courses 18 inches wide then 13 for most of the way up and a few courses of 9 inch at top.

I also returned the wall at both ends to add extra strength.

Coat the back of the wall with an elastomeric waterproof membrane - generic name for this type of product would be blackjack.

Then apply a geocomposite (cuspated hdpe and geotextile) wrapped to a drainage pipe at the base of the wall and backfill against.

The geocomposite will allow water to drain away form the wall and also protect the blackjack from piercing from the backfill.

I have a back yard sloping down to a detached concrete block shed. Every time it rains the water soaks into the back yard (bricks set in sand) and then into the shed. The shed floor is wet. Should I follow the same advice as above?
