Can anyone clarify if it is still the case that a person can retain their Medical Card for 3 years after returning to work having been on Jobseekers Benefit (3 day week) for over 6 months

It is currently the case that you retain your medical card if you return to work, after being in receipt of JSB for 12 months. The budget change has to be legislated for and will be phased in sometime in 2014..

Thanks Vandriver, was there a change in this regard in the Budget, when I rang Citizens Information they told me there was no change!

Going to change soon, then you can only retain a GP Visit Card.

Budget 2014 update

Unemployed people who return to work will be entitled to retain a GP Visit Card for 3 years without a means test. Currently they can retain their medical card for 3 years. This measure requires legislation and it is to be phased in during 2014

Thanks pudds, they kept that one under the radar, another disincentive to people trying to get back to work.

in fairness firehead - you would have a gp card... and pay very little for prescrip items!!

Hi aoc, if my understanding is correct you would only have free gp visits but you would pay full cost of prescription meds, dental fees, optician/glasses, etc
