Resurface cast iron bath or buy new steel bath?

Hi,

As part of our renovations we are replacing the entire bathroom suite, but are not sure what to do about the bath.

We have a cast iron bath that seems to be in decent nick bar the poor surface. One option would be to get this bath resurfaced. Does anyone know who does this, how much it costs and what the results are like?

The plumber mentioned that if they are resurfaced in situ they start to flake around the edges after a while. Does anyone have any experience of this, and is it possible to deliver the bath to them for resurfacing?

Plumber seems to be against keeping the cast iron bath, though this may be to do with it being more hassle to fit fittings to it for him, but hes giving us mates rates so cant complain.

Does anyone have any experience with steel baths - are they any good, price, suppliers etc? We want to go with either the cast iron or steel bath as we want a good sturdy bath.

Also, does anyone know if it is possible with either the steel or cast iron baths do you have to have a side panel or can you put them on legs and leave the side exposed (better feeling of space due to more exposed floor space)? Thanks.

Hi,

We've had this question a few times before and as far as I can recall not many appeared to have had the job done mainly because they felt you might get a new bath for the price of the resurfacing. This key post on has one mention at the very bottom of the thread about it.
