researching historical house prices

I am a potential first time buyer and would like to know does any local authority maintain historical, area specific, records of house prices?

I don't think that the local authority would have that info. Maybe the Land Registry/Registry of Deeds might have some relevant info? Revenue (stamp duty section) probably has something but I'm not sure if you can access this info.
