Replacing stair railing and newel post

Hi

we would like to replace our stairs railings and newel post. The stairs have ranch style rails which are unsuitable for kids so we want to put in spindles and a new bannister. I would also like to replace the newel post at the top as it is painted white and I would like the new rail and spindle to be wood.
I have heard that its not a good idea to replace the newel post but surely this can be done by someone experienced in replacing/building stairs ??

Had anyone else tried this / can you recommend someone to do this. We are based in north wicklow.

Also on a related note, any advice on where to go to buy carpet in the area or in south Dublin. there are lots of places to choose from but we would appreciate recommendations rather than going around to a lot of them. We want to get a decent carpet rather than a cheap one.

I find Des Kellys very good they have a huge range and carry stock so you don't have to wait long for fitting I use the branch in Sallynoggin no connection with this company.
With regard to the bannisters look at the range of replacement stair rails,bannisters etc they have in Woodies it looks very good .I have never used myself but my brother used it and it worked out fine for him however he did not change the newel post
