Replacing glass on ceramic hob

I dropped something on my hob this morning which cracked the glass. Just wondering if it is possible to have just the glass replaced? Has anyone got experience of this? Don't really want to buy a new hob ... this one cost me 1200 euro and it is January! Thanks
 
Go back to where you bought it and ask them if they know of anybody supplying spare parts for your hob they surely know what serviceman can handle this.

Had a serviceman out to look at it ... he didn't know. Said he never had to replace the glass before only the elements or the electronics.
 
I didn't think that hobs were servicable in this way and had to be totally replaced if the ceramic top was damaged.
 
The Alliance house insurance policy says it covers the glass in ceramic hobs so that suggests the glass on its own can be replaced. Does it still work ok with the crack in it or are the elements/control panel damaged also? We ended up buying a new hob last year because the quote for electrical repairs/parts ran to "six or seven hundred euro" with only a six month guarantee.
 
You might have accidental damage cover on contents under your house insurance ?
 
They can be changed, I know one in my dad's house had just the glass changed after one of us sat on it once too often ( cue a chorus of 'what were you doing sitting on it?' Answer- it was warm and right next to the sink, so we'd sit there and chat to whoever was doing the dishes).
 

What make is your hob?

It's a neff. I got a quote of about 275 to replace the glass and 25 for labour which I thought was pretty good. The house insurance should cover it. I was not keen to replace the hob as the new one might not be the same size and it could mean a new worktop.
 

Out of interest, does that hob have touch-sensitive controls built into the glass? Our damaged one does (an enamel saucepan boiled dry on it a few years back and pitted the glass) - it still works okay, and as we expected replacing the glass would be expensive we never did anything about it. The quote that you got though is a lot less than I would have expected it to cost.

...oh, and we immediately got rid of our remaining enamel saucepans - I don't know how other types of pan would react with the glass in such a situation but the enamel one seemed to act like an acid.
 

You can buy spare parts for these hobs online from NEFF if they supply the glass top and it only costs 25 yoyo's for labour then it may work out cheaper again give them a ring and ask for a quote hopefully it will work out better for you.
