replace Nickle Cadmium batteries with NIMH batteries in house phone

My house phones use Nickle Cadmium AA batteries.

They have after 5 years lost the ability to hold much charge.

I've got a lot of spare NIMH AA batteries

Can I use them with the phones ?

I don't want to try it until someone tells me it's ok.

Is there any fundamantal difference between charging a Nickel Cadmium battery and charging an NI MH battery i.e. voltage of charger different, or different amount of current passing through batteries during charging.

I have googled it, but can't find the answer !

I have a battery charger at home and I need to flick a switch to tell it that the batteries are either NiMH or NiCD. From this I would conclude that they do charge differently.
