Hi,

Before Christmas my wife claimed Medical Expenses - Med 1 Form.
Instead of getting any money due, she received a P21 (we did not specifically request it) - for 2005 and 2006, stating she OWES tax-man approx 380 euros.

I also received P21s for 2005 and 2006 (even though I did NOT submit Med1), stating
-> I OWE tax-man 780 and they want a cheque within next 30 days.

I've tried ringing them but on hold for more than 25 minutes.

Questions;
1) I'm currently un-employed can I be forced to pay it?
2) I was a PAYE worker and paid ALL taxes due in 2005 and 2006, the "mistakes" with the tax - is this by my former employer or by revenue?
=> if revenue made the mistake in 2006 - why should they be penalising me for their mistake now?
3) Was my P21 created purely because my wife is linked to me on the system?
4) Does their system show I am currently un-employed?

Thanks.

Firstly yes they can seek the tax payable.

But carefully review the P21 to ensure you have been given the correct tax credits, including Personal Credit, Paye Credit, Cr For Service Charges etc if they are due.

Neither Revenue nor employer are responsible for your tax owed .

You alone must ensure you claim the correct tax credits each tax year .

Underpayment , may have to do with you been unemployed and claiming Unemployment Benefit ..................

Check your entitlements to the following as well as the ones mentioned above :

1. Home carer tax credit
2. Union contributions tax credit
3. Medical expenses
4. Working expenses
5. Home improvement interest relief
