My friend is getting Job Seekers Allowance and they are worried that they might have to pay this back in tax when they get a new job.

Do you have to pay back JSA when you find employment?

If yes, what is the rate of payment?

Thanks.

No.

How in the world would people think like this?

They may have to pay tax, yes.

But pay back the JSA they received - no.

No you don't pay it back. To better understand it, you will get a statement from social welfare outlining how much you were paid in JSA, it's treated as an income like any other, your job will pay X, both are added together and you are taxed on that - less your tax allowances.

If my friend does not tell their future employer they were receiving jsa is there any way for them to find this out? Thanks for the replies.

Please note that JSA is not taxable income.
