Repair of electronic item - what are my rights?

I dropped in a Ds to a repair place claiming to be experienced in DS repairs.
When I dropped it in I was quoted a price and was told I would receive a call before the job was started to confirm.
I was never called and whenever I tried to contact they "didn't know".
Ok so the repair took 7 and a half weeks. A lot longer than they said and they ended up looking for twice as much as I was originally quoted. I refused and paid and paid 20 more than quoted instead.

Now the ds doesn't work. The repair was to replace a cover. They replaced the screen also (which I didn't ask for and was not on my original request which is detailed on the receipt)
The DS was in perfect working order when I brought it in. Now the touch screen will not work and the volume button will not move. It just stays at standard volume even if I move the button.

After calling the repair place they refused a refund and said they will do a repair free of charge.
Thing is should I shouldn't have to have it repaired. The problems were not there when I sent it into them.

Where do I stand on this?
