Can't see why it is discriminatory - any money collection business or individual can determine method of payment right.

But will they refuse if the renter gets the cheque, lodges it and pays the landlord in cash? Probably. the landlord has to sign the forms so I would imagine that the clause is a nicely put "no rent allowance tenants" clause. It is usually because the landlord is not registered and doesn't want to get caught by the tax man in my experience. As to whether it is disrimination, I would think it is.

how would that be descrimination if they can say 'suit single girl' 'Quiet couple' or 'purple wallabee' ?

You don't think its because the health board won't pay the full amount of the rent and the landlord has to continously chase his tenant for the balance, which is time consuming . On top of that bacause of the tenants low income the landlord can easily end up out of pocket. It is easier for him to get in somebody with a job & have the rent taken from their salary directly into the bank in full. Less hassle. On top of that the Health boards are continously sending out the forms to be refilled which means more adminstration work for the landlord. Why should he bother with all the extra hastle.

Of course it is disciminatory, but I don't think it is illegal, as the landlord is not disciminating on any of the 9 grounds defined under the Equal Status Act:

Gender, Marital Status, Family Status, Age, Race, Religion, Disability, Sexual Orientation, Membership of the Traveller community.

Now if you had lotsa cash to fund a high court case, you could argue that single parents, people with disabilities or ethnic minorities are more likely than others to use rent allowance therefore it is indirect discrimination.
