Hi,

I have been renting for the last two years and now want to claim back the rent relief owed.

My question is as I am now moving (in a few weeks) to a new rental accommodation will I be able to claim subsequent rent relief?

I understand that changes have been made regarding rent relief in the last budget so I'm a little unsure on the above.

Thanks.

Rent relief is been phased out. Not sure of the time line but I am sure if you google 'revenue rent relief' you will find out.

You can claim rent relief retrospectively. If you are PAYE this can done online. If not over the phone.

Rent relief is being phased out for existing tenancies, but it has been abolished for any new tenancy commencing after 7th December 2010. So if you move you will not be able to claim it for the new property.

Changes in Budget 2011

Budget 2011 changes the rules on rent relief for tenants of private rented housing:

  • The relief will be phased out over 8 years
  • Claimants who were not renting at 7 December 2010 and who subsequently enter into a rental agreement will not be able to claim relief
From the above it would appear to me as you were renting (elsewhere) in December 2010 you should still be able to claim the relief.
I'd check with revenue before moving

Yes, I think Black Sheep is right on this.

Here is the information on the phasing out [broken link removed]
