Rent relief query

Hi

I have looked through the revenue site and cannot work out an answer to my query so hope you can help.

Paying rent €800 per month for last 3 years. Never claimed rent relief. About to claim it now. Pay tax at higher rate. I know the max you can get is €2k per year but how do I work out (roughly) what would be due??

You get rent relief at the standard rate of tax only. So 20% of €2000, which is €400. This applies assuming you paid more then €2000 in rent. Its slightly less for previous years, I think it was only €1800 in 2007 for instance see www.revenue.ie for details.
