Sorry for a personalised post but I have been in rental accommodation for 10 months and have paid rent of leass than €3000. Can I claim rent relief on this? Also I'm moving to new accommodation. So if I'm entitled to rent relief do I claim at the end of the year or at the end of my tenacy?

You are entitled to tax relief on rent paid. Dont know what the limit is See [broken link removed].

I just want to be sure here (as the Locall revenue number is a joke, you have to enter your PPS number out loud and when you do it says its too busy and redirects you to ordering forms) but what is the limit and what would I likely get back if I claim rent relief.

Also from a landlord's view can he refuse to give me his PPS number??

See [broken link removed] for details of rent relief available to those in private rented accommodation. For example a single person under 55 is entitled to a standard rated (20%) tax credit of €1,500 in 2005 which is worth €1,500 @ 20% = €300 to them in their hand/pay packet. If the landlord won't give you his/her PPSN then just file a return with Revenue and add a note to this effect.

Revenue require the landlords ppsn no & also that you have reciepts to prove that you actually paid the rent during the specified period. Otherwise they could be refunding money to you where tax was never paid by the landlord on. The only other was would be to report him should he fail to give you his ppsn number.

I understand that Revenue will accept such claims without the landlord's PPS number, as they won't penalise the tenant for landlord's tax evasion.

Hmm, I don't have receipts, only the rent book that acts as proof of my tenancy. Is it possible to photocopy the rent book and send whatever payments (10 months = 22 payments) as the receipt? Any other alternatives to ascertaining acceptable proof of my tenancy?

Just enquiring. The form states this;

An individual, paying for private rented accommodation used as a sole or main residence. This includes rent paid for
flats, apartments or houses.

Can this apply to third level students? Whats the definition of sole/main residence?

Provided you are paying tax then you should benefit by claiming the rent paid. Your tax bill will be reduced.
