Rent relief and student child abroad

Hello,

There's a lot of fuss in the press that a parent can claim rent relief when paying for a 3rd level student child, renting a room specifically for the education.

Does this only apply to renting in Ireland? What if the child studies in another EU country?
 
What do you mean by "rent relief"?
Do you actually mean the rent tax credit?
The further guidance linked from that page mentions students on courses in other countries so I presume that the credit may be available for students studying abroad.
 
No. The residential property must be in the state.
Ah, you're correct. I missed this in the further guidance doc.
A list of approved colleges and courses is published on Revenue’s website each year and can be found here. However, it should be noted, as outlined in section 3 below, that the rent tax credit can only be claimed in relation to a residential property located in the State.
