Rent allowance and working

Can anyone tell me the rules regarding work and rent allowance-we are a couple with 2 children.
From what I can tell, one of us could work up to a max of 19hrs a week, or could both of us work 19hrs each?
How does income effect RA?
Is there an amount you can earn before it affects payment or not?
Want to work, desperately want to work but at the same time we cannot jeopardise the RA payment as no way we would be in a position to earn enough at the moment to pay rent-even if was full time-will most likely earn min wage or just above. New to all of this and find that every payment has so many trap doors. Totally understand the welfare trap now. System is nuts. Thanks in advance.

The limit for working and claiming Supplementary Welfare Allowance is 29 hrs per week.
Your earnings plus your social welfare income will be assessed as means.

Check www.welfare.ie for Rent Supplement to see the other rules for the scheme

I believe EllenB there is a new scheme whereby you don't automatically lose your rent allowance if you go back working.
