Rent a room?

Hi,
You are allowed rent a room out for 10K a year before paying tax.
This works out at 833 per month.
Say you only rent room(s) out for 7 months of the year, can you charge say 1100 for the room(s). The total would be 7,700 and the the tenant(s) would say they pay 1100 per month on their Rent 1 - Claim for Rent Relief for Private Rented accomadtion.

Anybody see any problems?

I am new to all this. I have friends who wish to move in for rest of this year and 3 months next year. If I split their rent as described it means everything is ok. Just wanted to make sure.

But why would you think that it might be a problem to rent for part of the year while still collecting under the annual rent a room rental income limit of €10K? Anyway as mentioned above there is nothing wrong with what you are suggesting. Obviously you must remain an owner occupier and meet the normal rules of the scheme etc.

Yes that means Principle Residence. Which isn't accurately defined anywhere? E.g. say I spend a month abroad with work or stay a few nights with the girlfriend? I don't own anywhere else, is that sufficient?

For whatever reason, a lot of people seem to get confused on the matter and think that €10k max per year means €833max per month...
