Rendered Quoins

Hi

I am starting a new build quite close to an existing period property and want the new build to blend in, if possible.

The period property is listed by the National Inventory as having rendered quoins, rendered window surrounds / moulds and rendered door surrounds.

I wanted to create the same effect, but not sure how easy this would be to replicate. Are rendered quoins a specialised skill for plasterers or would most plasterers be able to achieve this? How is it done?

Anyone have any experience of this?

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Many Thanks

If you have a carpenter make up and fit the battens for the quoins it's not a hugely big job for the plasterer. It is possible now to buy precast concrete "quoins" which are fixed in place with ceramic tile adhesive. This is done before the plasterer starts his work; when rendered around and painted in they can look quite authentic. That said an "old school" plasterer should be able to give you the old look using more traditional methods.

A competent plasterer will batten out and float the quoins. Likewise around the door. If they're gothic or eliptical arches ....... then maybe (as Carpenter says) one of the old school or a plasterer experienced in this type of work.

Thank you so much for your help. I will look into the 'old school' plasterer option, as the door and window surrounds are quite elaborate.
