Interesting solutions I fully intend trying. "Cigarette ashes and mayonnaise" has to be a winning combination, not just a furniture stain remover, but a great party dip.
Had the same problem on my fireplace, went to the maker who told me to use "Fairy liquid" and lots of elbow grease. It acts as a mild polishing paste. Worked for me.
