We're moving house. Dublin to the south west of the country. It takes about 4 hours to get there.

We are renting here so won't have that much in the way of furniture to transfer: 2 cots, a child's wardrobe, a couple of bookshelves, a day bed from Ikea. We also have a BBQ, a strimmer, patio table and chairs and two high chairs. The rest of the stuff is just clothes, toys and random bits like a set of pots, a fryer, slow cooker and hoover.

We rang one company who said if we do the packing etc ourselves and they'll load the truck and unload it, there'd be two price options.

1) It'd be done in a day, the more expensive option
2) It'd be done over two days, so say they pick up on a Wednesday, they'd drop off at new address on the Friday.

Option one will cost €1800. Option 2 will be €1200. Is it just me or is this MENTAL money?
 
Where I am the local DIY store and Ikea rent vans/trucks for very low money. Might be an option.
 
Try smullen couriers in mullingar, used them few times, would recommend. Theyve a website. [broken link removed]
 
Try gumtree. We moved two bookshelves, three chest of drawers, cot and quite a few boxes - the full of a 'big' van. Helped guy load/unload and granted while we weren't going far - we were charged EUR40.

I imagine for a full day they might charge 2.5 times that. No harm in ringing these guys, the most jobs they have per day is 3.
 
Your only question seems to be 'is it mental money?', and remember all posts seeking/providing recomendations shoud go in the Recommend tradesmen and suppliers forum.

Did you seek quotes from others providing the same service? What did they say?

There's more than just a van involved in the original quote. There's the loading & unloading, travel time there and back for 2+ movers, fuel, meal allowences, insurance, etc.. As it's a 4 hour drive, doing it all in one day is likely to require overtime payments for the movers. So a lot more than the cost of hiring a van.

The reason I asked if they had shopped around is that is the only way they can determine if the quote is in line with the market. Only the OP can decide if it's 'mental' money, as what some people consider mental, others may find acceptable.
 
Although the 'white van man' has a very shoddy reputation, there are plenty of reliable people out there with a van who would be perfectly suited to your needs. Recently I was moving the contents of a house and the original plan was to rent a van. For a decent sized van for the weekend with fuel, insurance, excess etc. it was costing c. €300. For a little more we got a man with van, the extra set of hands was a huge help.

Key is to have all the packing done before starting the move. Pallet wrap (industrial cling film) was great for covering everything.
