Relaying a stair carpet

Our stair carpet is down for around 10 years and shows sign of wear. We were thinking of getting a qualified person to relay it and are wondering if this a good idea.

Would it work if you relayed the same carpet ? (move the entire carpet up one riser to where the the 1st tread was, then replace the 1st riser with a new piece).

We got it done about 4 months ago. Our carpet was worn on the step and by turning it we moved the worn sections to the back and they became invisible. Unfortunately we have a turn on our stairs and the carpet layer could do nothing about this area. If we had a piece of the carpet left over from when we originally bought it he could have done something. There were a few ridges in the carpet after it was turned that are still visible. It was more a patch job in the end.
Our hall and landing areas are fine and don't need replacing. Thinking of getting a runner just for the stairs at some stage or painting them.

Don't paint them! I can, as the neighbour of somebody who replaced their carpet with paint, tell you that they are very noisy. (Yes, the neighbour).

I don't think its worth the bother. We had it done some years ago and it never looked right. Perhaps it was just in my head but it always looked still worn in sections even though it was done by a professional carpet fitter.
