Registering for VAT,quickly

Hi, I am shortly setting up a new business, and having bought premises, and intend doing a lot of remedial work( buildings )etc. I will be paying vat on fees, building materials agents architects etc.. How do I register for vat even though my turnover wont be starting for a while? I have a bookkeeper who can handle the vat for me, but will be getting an accountant soon. But I wanted to know if I can register anyway soon, Thanks .
