Refused viewing by Estate Agent

Hi. Just wondering is it normal for an estate agent to refuse to allow you to view a house because you are not a first time buyer? Myself and my husband saw a house we loved and could afford and rang for a viewing. I was asked were we first time buyers. I said no. The Lady on phone said the developer only wants first time buyers to see the property as he wants a quick sale and told me that they were not willing to allow us to view the house. She asked nothing of our financial situation or would we be able to afford the house. She assumed because we are not first time buyers that we could not. I'm just wondering is this the way things are done now? I Was really shocked on the phone and just said thanks and hung up but now i'm thinking about it and am really fed up because we love the house and were really interested in buying it if we liked the inside.

I can picture it now, Estate agent mentions in a casual conversation that houses sell quicker if the buyer is not in a chain, and that this developer has a preference for a first time buyer....

Lady answering the phone misreads this and offers her black or white interpretation of the conversation as gospel.

Call back and ask for the boss......
