Refund on Beds

We bought 5 beds last August for our new house (fairly basic pine bedframes - €170 for singles and €270 for King Size)
One of the single beds broke in February when my wife sat on teh edge with our 3 yr old son. - It was repaired by the shop faitly quickly. At the time I thought that the wood was pretty poor quality when I saw the broken pieces.
Another single bed broke in a similar way in April - and they refused to even discuss it - accusing us of abusing the beds! The beds have not been jumped on or abused in any way . The worst treatment they would have had is a couple of teenage boys sitting on it at a time - but surely any bed should take that. The King Sized bed frame is now cracking and creaking when ever we so much as move in the bed.
I have written to the shop - saying that I am not happy with the quality of the beds and asking for a full refund on all beds. (€940) They have replied offering €600 for all the beds - which I have rejected. I am wondering if anyone has any experience of this type of dispute - and maybe of the small claims court? Does anyone think I am pushing it too far?

Id be tempted to take the 600 too. Does that include returning the mattresses?

Im tempted to say dont take anything they give you lying down but whatever you do, make sure you sleep on it.

Take the €600 and run. They don't have to give you a full refund. They're within their rights to firstly repair the beds, which they did, and secondly replace the beds, which could come next if you keep complaining. And that'd be more hassle than it's worth, having beds removed and new beds of same quality coming back in.

You possibly could get them for fit for purpose, but then again, they're nearly a year old now, and you've used them for sleeping on since then, so they're obviously doing their job as beds.

Can I just point out that it is just the wooden bed frames I am trying to get a refund on - not the mattresses.

Hi Irishlinks

I think that you should speak to somebody in ODCA and/or ECC. They would be in a good position to advise whether to take this sum or not.

Phone Numbers:

ECC: 01 8090600
ODCA: 402 5555 (01 area), 1890 220 229 (outside 01 area)

You get what you paid for I suppose

What? You think €170 is cheap for a pine bedframe? (excludes mattress)
There are loads out there for €99 - I thought that by going for something that wasn't the cheapest that I would get better quality.
Anyway - a bed is a bed and surely should last more than 6 months no matter what you pay for it?

Yes personally I do think 170E is not alot for a frame for a bed, for the amount of time we spend in our beds I think 170E is not alot
