Refund delay

I recieved a balancing statement from the Revenue Commissioners about 5 weeks ago, indicating I was due a refund. Needless to say, no cheque has winged it my way just yet.

Generally, how long does this usually take? The missus has a long Xmas list that is currently going on the credit card....

PS - why do we celebrate getting a refund when it is our money to start with??
 
It varies a lot in my experience. If I was eagerly awaiting a refund then I'd contact them directly to enquire about the status of the refund process.
 
Out of curiosity, what is the rate of interest will they use for this delay?

Still waiting on this, balancing statement received 22 Oct, dosh received ???. To add insult to injury, I have just got a balancing statement for 2003 (original post concerned 2002 tax affairs) asking for immediate payment!!!!

When do the Revenue Commissioners overstep the mark?

It should not take 5 weeks after issue of assessment for a refund to issue. The matter may be complicated by the existence of liabilities for other years. The Revenue will not normally issue refunds where there are outstanding liabilities elsewhere on the taxpayer's account. You will really need to contact them to find out what is going on.

I completed a form 12 in Sept this year and received a rebate in October.As it tranpired there was a slight error on the rebate and when I rang them and informed them of it I received a further cheque within 2 weeks.

Do you know if the Revenue still do not pay interest for late refunds or was there ever any scheme introduced by Revenue to compensate taxpayers for delays in granting tax refunds because of some fault on the Revenue Commissioners' part (as per the Ombudsman recommendation back in 02
 

Revenue do not pay interest on P21 Balnacing Statement refunds.
 
That's a long delay.

I recently requested a P21 for 2007. I received the P21 within a week and a refund the following day.

Similarly, I requested a P21 for 2008. My P21 and refund were with me within a week.

I used ROS PAYE services, which may have speeded things up.
 
Oh just thinking, could Revenue have paid the refund directly into your bank account. They did that recently with someone I know.
