Hi all

I'm hoping that someone can give me some advice on the following?

If an employer is looking for references can I take it that I am in line for a job (came 2nd on a panel for a public sector job)

if I am later informed that there is no work at present should I presume that one of my referees gave me a bad reference (even though they all told me that gave very positive ones - on those feedback sheets).

Do I have a right to ask the HR dept if an employer has given me bad reference?

Many Thanks

Not sure about the public sector but I would expect to asked for permission before refernces are acontacted and would definitely not want current employer contacted without a written job offer (subject to reference)

Ask your contact have you a job offer subject to your refernces being ok or are they taking references to put you on a 'panel'.

References are usually given in confidence but if you are worried that a referee may give you a poor reference contact them beforehand and ask them if they are comfortable with being quoted as a refence and what kind of reference they would give.

Good luck with the job search

Re: References????

did you put the references on your CV.

I normally put on the end of it references on request, then if they request them refer them back to people that I know will give a good reference..also I would normally phone the person and let them know to expect a call.

Also - I don't think they base their job offers on references, they should base it on you at your interview, your CV, your experience etc. and the references should be just as back up.

Re: References????

Depends on the employer. When I got my last job, they offered it first and then looked for references afterwards as confirmation of my abilities I suppose. But I know that most employers don't really give references much notice unless they are bad
