If I am made redundant in the Republic of Ireland, having worked there for 5 years previously, I am entitled to Job Seekers Allowance.

How is this effected if I decide to move to Northern Ireland and am still unemployed there? Am I entitled to still claim in the South? Am I entitled to claim in the North instead (bearing in mind I haven't paid tax/ National Insurance there)?

Many thanks

If you are entitled to Jobseeker's Benefit (based on PRSI contributions), you can transfer it to another EU state for a limited period of time.

From www.welfare.ie (FAQs on Jobseeker's Benefit)

14. If I want to transfer my jobseeker's benefit to another country, what must I do?

  • Go into your Social Welfare Local Office or Branch Office and ask to have your payment transferred
  • A person in receipt of Irish JB for at least 4 weeks may transfer the JB claim to a country covered by EC Regulations for up to 13 weeks (78 days) if they register their intention to look for work abroad before they leave the State
  • Payment will not be transferred if a person leaves without getting approval in advance from the social welfare office where they sign-on.

Thanks for the information.

Are you limited to a total of 13 weeks payment or after 13 weeks would you move to the "local" rate of benefit? If not, it's not really a runner...

After 13 weeks, you would be subject to local jobseeker claim rules if you are still unemployed.
