Yes, but you'll be no more vulnerable than anyone else whose position is made redundant.
I've never taken a voluntary career break and unless you have some stress-related illness I'd think long an hard about it.
Taking a career break in the middle of a recession could give an employers the wrong impression.
OTOH it could suit your employer down to the ground to see some staff take a break to tide the firm over a time of lean demand.
Perhaps you could discuss it fully with your employer in the context suggested above, subject to taking independent professional advice in RL.
