Redundancy calculation for long term (but sporadic) employee

I have an employee on the books since around '89. Back then, the nature of the work meant he'd work say 5 months, be P45d, gone for 6 mths, employed for 7 months, P45d , reemployed 6 months later....it went on like this until the mid nineties from which time he has been in continuous employment.

When working out his redundancy on the Dept calculator, breaks in service can only be input going back the last four years. It calculates based on continuous employment from the original start date in '89 up to four years ago.

Anyone know if this is the case or what options I have to minimise my liability for his periods of non-emplyment in the early years (when he would have always had work elsewhere in the gaps).

I rang the department but didn't get anywhere.
