Redundancy and possible replacement of job

Husband was given 2 weeks notice 1 week ago. Unfortunately he is only with the company for 1 year and 5 months so he won't get any payment other then the 2 weeks notice.

Now there are rumours that the company are re-employing the younger brother of 1 of the mds that was let go at christmas to do the same job that my husband was made redundant from! Can they do this?
