Redundancy and entitlements

Sad to say it looks like I will no longer have a job at some stage in early 2013. I will get approx 1 years salary as a redundancy payment. I have never been out of work before or claimed any entitlement so am totally clueless. There are not many opportunities in my field at the moment but intend looking for a job in any area but in the (hopefully short) term it looks like I will be claiming unemployment benefit.

I am separated with 3 young children. Ex pays maintenance sporadically but am taking him to court to formalise this maintenance. I am paying the (large) mortgage and everything else on my own.

From reading the Citizens information website, it seems I am entitled to either Job Seekers Benefit or Lone parent allowance (and the associated entitlements for the children). Both amounts seem the same to me. I know that lone parents ends when the child reaches a certain age (10 in my case) but i am a long way off that.

Just wondering who decides whether I get JSA or lone parents allowance? Do i apply for both and are there any advantages to one over the other?
Thanks in advance.

Just remember JSB is not means tested. What I would do is call to your SW office - my uncle was in a similar situation and he made an appointment and got really good advice.
