Reduced insurance for a low mileage driver

I rarely use my car - about 5,000 km per annum.

My broker says that I can't get a discount. Anyone know if it is possible?

Some companies give this discount and some don't. You must be with one that doesn't. Ask the broker to note it on your file anyway as it may make a difference for alternative quotes at your renewal.

Hibernian offer a discount but its only 5% afaik

I think it's 2.5% discount from 5000-10000 miles and 5% from 0-5000 miles.

Hi, Hibernian offer mileage discount for less than 10,000 miles not Klm a year and also have discounts for holding another product with them. This will give you 15% off and also dont forget your penanlty point discounts.

I use Allianz and they reduce their premiums for low mileage too

I rang Allianz and they do not give a discount for low kilometerage. I asked the guy to check and he did and confirmed that they don't. They quoted me a premium of €504. However, I am already insured with them under the Leinster Society of Chartered Accountants scheme and the premium is €385.

I rang Hibernian. While I was waiting the automated message told me that they would check my details against a centralised claims database. They then said "There will now be some important regulatory messages. Press 1 to hear these messages. Press 2 to skip them". I wonder how many people press 1?

When an operator answered she asked my permission to retain the data on her database under the Data Protection Act. I refused. And she refused to quote.

I got an online quote instead and it was for €410. There is an option to choose low kilometerage driving.

If you haven't already done so, It might be an idea to contact FBD.
I've no idea what their postion is on low mileage insurance but I've found them to be flexible and easy to deal with in general.

Seems strange - As a data controller, they have [broken link removed];

"the data shall not be kept for longer than is necessary for that purpose or those purposes"

I guess it depends whether the 'purpose' under the Act is deemed to be the giving of the quotation, or their 'purpose' to use the quotation data to send you a competing quotation next year, and the next year etc.

if the body keeping the information has no good reason to hold it (i.e. it is irrelevant or excessive for the purpose), or if the information has not been obtained fairly

so I guess you could always agree to them keeping the data, get the quote, and then submit an instruction for them to delete your data.

If you feel strongly, you could always refer the matter to the Data Protection Commissioner for investigation.

One option is to purchase a classic car over 30 years old and you will definitely obtain both low insurance (due to low mileage) and low road tax.

The last time I looked into this, you could only get classic car insurance on a second car, not on your main car.
