Recommendations - 1hr from Barcelona

All,

Looking at buying a villa or nice apartment within 1-2 hour drive from Barcelona. Can anyone recommend a nice area in that region which would meet my criteria ?

How about Girona ? It's a beautiful city. Very scenic & with good rail links to Barcelona & France. Close to the mountains & close to the beaches & Ryanair flies there.
 
We can only comment on places we have been, i.e. in my case Tarragona and Salou, both near Reus airport for Ryanair.

Why not take a compass(from a mathematical set) and draw a 100 mile/kilometer circle around Barca and see what towns fall into it?
 
have a look at sant feliu de guiaxols its on the coast 30 min from girona 1 hour from barca not a tourist trap well worth a look lived there for 2 years and still wonder why i came back to ireland.beware of the estate agents once you speak english price goes up, dont rush into buying

Can anyone recommend (from personal experience) a good estate agent or website to get a handle on what kind of peroerties are currently available/price range ?

try http://www.villacostabrava.com/ they are dutch speak perfect english and very helpful but charge stupid prices to tourists.i would use them to see whats on the market and sus the place out.they deal mostly with coastal stuff around sant feliu.there are loads of properties for sale in the area and nothing selling a bit like ireland at the minute.if i were you i would try and rent for six months ,rents in girona are very cheap (lived there for 6 months and loved it)loved the coast even more.again beware estate agents as its not a regulated industry in spain.
 
Yep, Sant Feliu De Guixols, lovely town on the Costa Brava with many good restaurants and bars. Sant Feliu is a proper working town which is good when winter comes as there is still lots of people around. Other coastal towns tend to be ghost towns in winter.

Lots of water sports, windsurfing, kayaking, diving (and for certain Cork people, diving off rocks into the sea at 4am is a favourite pasttime... ).
 
sunday times had a graph showing the 'average' prices in Spain. Barcelona was the most expensive by a country mil. Girona was much cheaper.
 
If you want to keep prices down you could nip over the border to France. In Perpignan you'll still be in Catalunya but at half the price of Barcelona. The TGV will extend to Barcelona by 2010 which will make the journey just 45 minutes.
 
I went to Sitges last July and really liked it. It's a very gay-friendly resort so that may not be to your liking, but I had a laugh all-the-same! It's just such a nice place and easy to get to from Barcelona (about half an hour on the train). We stayed here: [broken link removed]
and it was lovely. Would definitely go back. It's about 5-10 minutes of a walk into Sitges itself and was next to the marina where there were lots of restaurants.

There's also an insane beach club place a few kms out of town. It's bananas so it depends on what you're into.
