Recommend a tree/shrub as a christening gift

[Newbie!]

I want to buy a tree or shrub for a baby's christening. Any recommendations or thoughts for something special? I think something that possibly has some colour at some time of year..maybe on the leaves or flowers. Also it cant be anything too big as it has to go into a suburban garden.

I immediately thought JASMINE with its resplendent flowers and characteristic scent would make it a great choice. However I am not sure if it is hardy enough.
