Reclaiming VRT on car.

I am just wondering if any one can shed some light on a reclaiming VRT on a car that i imported from the UK. The car in quistion is a 1988 golf GTI which was left to me by my uncle who died approx. three years ago. Two years ago i priced the VRT for the vehicle on the revenue website and was quoted Approx. 350 euro. I since went traveling for 14 months and then proceeded to register the vehicle on my return. The VRT price had since changed by the Revenue and now is 665 euro and they valued the vehicle at 2700 euro. I dont think the car is worth any where near the value that the revenue has put on it and im wondering if there is anyway i can reclaim the 665 VRT that i have paid.

I have a feeling I heard somewhere that if you were left the vehicle by a deceased relative then you are exempt from V.R.T. altogether? Maybe someone else has info on this?
