just wanted to clarify the VAT situation on Commercial Vehicles. My hubbie is a carpenter and bought a second hand van in December. He got a loan from BOI finance. Whatever way it works, the finance crowd paid the garage direct. When hubbie picked up van he got a basic receipt for the amount paid, which I said to him wasn't really sufficient for anything. He rang the finance crowd who said that they send him the documentation which would back up a VAT claim. they haven't as yet as they say they are waiting for some documentation from the garage. I need to fill in nov-dec VAT 3 now and didn't know what to do about the van, hubbie rang accountant who said stick in down on VAT 3. I don't have any documentation to work from, the van cost €11,500 inc VAT. Am i right in saying van would have cost €9504.13 ex VAT. VAT = €1995.87. i.e. 21% any advice greatly appreciated. regards not a clue

Even if you're entitled to claim back this VAT, you can't do so without a VAT invoice.

Obviously it's a cash flow issue, as you won't get another chance for 2 months. Have you considered telephoning the garage and asking an invoice faxed with the VAT charged and their VAT number?

The VAT treatment of a commercial vehicle also depends on what type of financing you got. If the financing is a hire purchase agreement you can claim all the VAT once you get a VAT invoice. If you a finance lease the VAT is reclaimed on each individual payment made to the bank andthey will supply you a schedule of payments. This is quite important to check which form of finance you got.
