Reclaiming tax relief on medical expenses

I was very ill last year and incurred drug expenses before I was granted a medical card due to the severity of my illnesses.

I sent the receipts into the medical card section but have heard nothing back in months. The medical social worker at the hospital have said that I should send them in but that I might not be entitled to anything.

I have asked the pharmacy for new print outs of my expenses again to send into revenue. I can't remember exactly how much they came to, but I did have the drug refund scheme cap.

- What is the name of the form I need? And where do I get it?
- Where exactly do I send it?
- What is the refund I might be entitled to?
- These costs were incurred in 2007, is it too late to make this claim?

Thanks for your help.

The form is called a MED 1 - you can get it off the revenue.ie website here:

You will be able to claim back the tax on what you have spent, yes you can claim for 2007.
I dont know where it gets sent - i do mine online.

You send the MED1 form to your normal tax office - i.e. the one mentioned on your statement of tax credits etc. You can backdate tax claims by up to 4 tax years (i.e. back to 2004 this year). For 207 you get back 20% or 41% of any qualifying medical expenses depending on your normal rate of tax. Prior to 2007 there was a €125 (individual)/€250 (joint/family) "excess" on claims.
