reclaiming self build vat

Hi there

This is my first post. Great website. A friend recently told me about a scheme which exists in the U.K that he thinks is also available in Ireland.
The premise is that basically you can claim back on vat spend on goods and material in a self build home. Is this true or just a cruel rumour?

I'd love to hear the english scheme, I seriously doubt that there is a scheme in place in the UK to reclaim VAT on a self build.

In Ireland; there isn't a scheme and never will be
