Rear registration plate light for NCT test

I have my NCT test next monday and need a rear registration plate light fitted on my car (VW POLO). The mechanic i normally use has let me down this time unfortunately.

Does anyone know where i could get one fitted somewhere in Dublin within this time frame? I may have to postpone my test otherwise.

Thanks.

Try Macken Motors, 01 6770500

They are on Cardiff Lane beside they Ferryman pub in city centre. Very small spot, Noel is the guys name. Got a few quick jobs done there before, also on VW Polo

Thanks for that username123, i know that place. Will give them a call.

I've just heard that the car may not necessarily fail if the light isn't there so even if i don't get it on time i might just chance the test anyway. It says that i would get a 'fail advisory' for this on the NCT site.

On a related note, does anyone know if you can have aftermarket number plates for the NCT? Mine has at the moment (numbers are in italics and text is a bit smaller than usual)....do I need to refit the originals?

They did away with 'fail advisory' as a category in 2003. I'd check that you're looking at the current rules and not an older doc.

Hi Berni, it says it here:

This was updated in April 2010.

Ah, good stuff. It must be about the only thing you're still allowed to get away with so :)

 Mother of God this country gets more ridiculous by the day, a €5000 fine! I'll have to check mine against the template so.

I may have to postpone my test otherwise.

If you fail your NCT for lights not working, you will not have to pay the re-test fee as they can check this without using one of the test lanes. At this stage if you cancel your test you will incur a cancellation fee so you may as well have the test done even if the light is not working and it will cost you nothing extra (unless you fail on something else of course)

I wouldn't agree with you there. Non-regulation plates can't be read by electronic equipment e.g. toll roads, law enforcement agencies.. there is very good reason to discourage the use of such plates.

Just to let you all know that i didn't get this fixed on time but did the test today anyway and passed. There wasn't a mention made about the light not being there.
