I am about to start building a stone wall and entrance. We have not selected a gate yet, but we know it won't be electric.

Is there a typical height for each of the gate hangers so that we can go ahead and put them in without knowing what specific gate we will go with, or should we hold off until we have chosen a gate first, and therefore know exactly at what height to put the hangers.

Build the wall and leave the pillars until your ready for the gate.

I've just built a stone enterance to suit the gates. Off the shelf gates are 50% cheaper than ones that need to be made to suit the piers. My advice is that it's much cheaper and less hastle to get the gates first and build the walls to suit. Also don't forget to make provision for electric gates in the future, if you ever change your mind. Also get a postbox put into the wall.
