I have an electrician coming back in a few weeks to do some work for me (new sockets/downlighters etc). One of the things on the list is fitting 2 wall mounted reading lights. We are to supply these ourselves. One thing he mentioned was to make sure they were switched (ie have an on off switch/cord built in). I don't think he is running them from the lighting circuit but from the plug socket located nearby (if this makes sense). I have checked the usual suspects (B&Q/Altantic etc) and havent come across what I am looking for, the nearest I can find are bathroom lights (see link below). I have also shown a link to the style of light I was looking for, has anyone ever seen them here? I could go down the web purchase route but this makes it more difficult if they are the wrong ones. Any help would be appreciated
I suggest you head for Stillorgan Decor, they may have exactly what you are looking for. I purchased lights something simular to the lights you want there. These were touch sensitive, no switch, you just touch the brushed steel panel and they turn on and off. My electircian also wired them up form the sockets, no problem.
If you're sensitive to electromagnetic "humming", touch sensitive lights aren't suitable as they generally emit a continuous low volume high-frequency whine - in my experience, anyway. In any case, I suspect they're not suitable for hardwiring, as opposed to plug-in versions, since you can't fully break the circuit.
I'd definitely go for the switched option - safer, and less annoying.
There are a fair few specialist lighting shops around which aren't absurdly expensive and should be worth a look - where are you based?
I'm based North Dublin (but dont mind a bit of a hike to get them). I had a look at the yellow pages alright and there are loads of lighting shops alright, just wondered if anyone had purchased something similar recently. I will give Stilorgan decor a shout, they may have other types,
The places I know are generally city centre or south Dublin - there's a good place on Camden Street, though I can't remember its name. It's close to the Simon Community charity shop, if you know the area. There's also Hall of Lights on Harold's Cross Road, and a place on Terenure Road East near the village. Roches used to be good for lighting without blowing the budget, but I'm not sure if they've got out of the homewares bit since the buyout.
