Reading Glasses - Any real need for Opticians?

With age-related shortsightedness, is there any real need to get reading glasses from the Optician?
Do the cheap over the counter ones work just as well.
I've just bought some basic reading glasses from the optician following an eye test, and paid handsomely for them.
I'm wondering was I an idiot when I could have paid €3 in Heatons for a pair...
