Re VW Golf Acceleration problems

Hi
My VW Golf 99 1.4 is very sluggish on starting from cold and does not accelerate smoothly.Any advice or can anyone recommend a good VW mechanic (Not Main Dealer) in the dublin area.
Have tried changing plugs and air filter and cleaned throttle head casing.

Sounds like a problem with the Airflow Mass Metre. There have been plenty of problems with the Bosch unit. Basically if it fails the EMU goes into 'limp home' mode hence sluggishness.

Had a similar problem with my own 1.9Tdi. Not the cheapest part to buy new! I got mine from a scrap yard in Chelmsford in the UK when i was over there for a wedding. Cost 125 Sterling and fitted it myself which is very easy to do. Once replaced all was well.
 
It could be that the throttle body is all blocked up with gunk clean this first and see if there is any improvement. If not...its the air flow meter.
