Hi all,

My brother is thinking of putting in an offer on a semi detached house but an ESB transformer is in the garden. Is it safe to have this in the garden? and to live so close to one. Any health risks? Can this catch fire and would it mean higher house insurance?

Any opinions would be welcome.

why buy this house...many more houses for sale

I wouldnt buy it if it were me
 
I wouldn't buy it either .... nothing proven but I'd be wary of electro magnetic fields emanating from the transformer ..... similar to the interference on a radio by a mobile only on a bigger scale.

As chlipps says plenty more property for sale out there .... and most without transformers in their gardens.
 
leaving health issues a side . if he did buy the property. when he goes to sell in the future . people will have the same fears as you are having and will mean its hard to negotiate a good price .
 
Personally I wouldn't have any fears on Health issues, however this sounds like a 10Kv estate transformer cubicle, these are usually located flush with a side wall of the garden. They tend to be a "gathering point" for local kids who would climb up on top for a comfortable perch with a view. If this is the case then I wonder if the privacy of your back garden would be compromised?
 
Some of them make a low level humming noise which can be distracting if you wish to sleep with a window open.
 
Quick question on this topic, if anyone has opinion.

We are installing ESB to our house, we had the engineer out today. We had no idea where the power is ect. but it appears - the high 220KV ( i think he said ) is in the field accross the road they will bring the electicity accross the road to us to the far corner of our site (about 60ft away from the house) and this pole he says will have a transformer on it ( to drop the voltage) before it enters the house.

Now my question, is this a health risk?

When I heard transformer I got worried and the engineer said I should not worry, allternatively they will have to put another pole in the farmers field opposite and the engineer did not want to be bothered asking him....he also mentioned that the strength of power to the house maybe weakened....

I just want to know is this dangerous??

Got the same done on my site. I asked the same question of my Architect, who then asked an electrical engineer. All evidence is that there are no known risks associated with this type of transformer on top of the pole.

Since ours has gone up I don't even notice it on our site, however now I know what they are I see them all over rural Ireland whereas before I wouldn't have even noticed them. Its about the size of a 5 gallon drum.

Have the same, only issue is the stay wire is in the garden and bit of a pain for mowing around.
