Hi All,

I have been told recently that China is a fantastic place to go to furnish your house, Tiles, Wooden Floors, All Furniture etc. Has anyone here any ideas of what the stuff there is like and if anyone has done it can you let me know how it went etc. House has gone over budget and am looking to try and save some serious cash over there.

Cheers

You will need an interpreter out there, no one has English and you will need to get all your products to the port.
Furniture, tiles and all that are for nothing out there, furniture is not of the best quality, it looks good though and bathroom fittings like baths etc have different fittings compared to Ireland so your plumber will then drive you mad over this.
Electrical products are fine but your electrician will need to look over them before u fit them.
All and all it is worth it. A 20ft container will carry 28 tonne. You then pay 11% at the dock.

I have a few english speaking contacts out there. For anything smaller than a container, would anyone suggest anything in particular thats good value ?

Best to use a shipping company that will consolidate their shipment with other shipments in a 20 or 40ft container from China.

Companys that I know who do this are Phoenix Int'l - 8091515 Mark O' Shaughnessy or Air Ocean - 8647613 Garrett O Brien.

P.S. I do not know these people personally.

I personally wouldnt buy anything from China or that is made in china. I wouldnt support the kind of regime the government run over there.

A significant amount of the goods we buy in the shops are made in China or have a large element that comes from China. Most large European and US brands have a manufacturing presence in China or they buy significant volumes of components or sub assemblies that are then assembled in Europe so that you feel you've bought something "Made In Germany" or similar. Like it or not it's a fact of life and is only going to be more so.

You could take that thought and extend it to France supplying arms to Libyas' Gadaffi, hence dont buy anything French , Uk oil companies in Burma plus UK arms companies, the west supplying Opium to Chinese citizens at the turn of the century. Theres a lot of craziness out there why be selective ? ... practically every country in the world is tainted in some way.
I hope you are not just singling out China. I'm a stirrer of course but Its a perfectly valid question.

After reading this book linked below at the weekend I dont even want oil from Saudi Arabia but what can we do ? Its' all about the greater good.

To get back on topic if it helps some Chinese person trying to make a living then wheres the harm ? I think China is westernising anyway , unlike other regimes.

Yuo'd probably want to bringing over product in bulk in order for it to make sense. The lyrath hotel in kilkenny furnished itself head to toe from China. Check it out, it looks great

Yeah I understand that but I will not buy anything that has a made in china tag on it. I know I cant get away with it indefinitely but I do my best to avoid buying things that are assembled etc in china and clothes that are made there etc.

Its because of the human rights issues over there and the ongoing Tibetan cause. The Chinese govt. just think they can do what they like and the world will just accept it. It just sickens me. I am a consumer and have the right to choose what I buy so it is being selective but I have every right to do so and I choose not to support China as a country in any shape or form.

No I have never been to China, but the fact remains about the human rights issues in Tibet. Its not that I dont like their country, I do not like the government so I dont want to give any of my money to a country that is run in such a way.

Your posts could be travelling through internet infrastructure that has been manufactured in China before arriving at the AAM server. Does that not play on your conscience?

This is an Irish company I came across who specialise in importing from China. They do furniture and bathroom fittings etc. I haven't used them (I haven't had the need). This might be what your looking for!

Well I cant really do anything about that so I dont feel too bad about it. I do what I can to avoid buying anything made in china so that does me.

tom99: You might consider a trip to Hong Kong or buy from there, as savings would also be good, language / cultural difficulties less and electrical stuff the same as here.

Bob the Slob: Sure China has its issues. China gets a lot of bad publicity, that portrays it in a very negative light - IMO. I don't know how you can draw the line and be the ultimate politically correct consumer. An all out ban on all things Chinese, seems pretty absurd an impossible - IMO. I suggest you take a visit and check it out yourself!

I wonder why it gets all this bad publicity though, its hardly from rumours going around. I never claimed I was the ultimate politically correct customer Deirdra, you're putting words in my mouth. I just dont want to support china because of the way they treat the Tibetans, mainly. Its known the world over that even though it happens, its covered up pretty well and cant really be seen from the "outside". Whats the big deal tho, surely everyone has a right to choose what they buy?

Bob the Slob - if you take that stance then surely you cant buy anything from the US if not for their opportunistic foreign policies (i.e. how the US treats others) for their own neglect of their own people - remember Hurricane Katrina, race-issues, the death penalty, expediency>democracy (Al Gore got more votes) etc etc.

I'm not saying boycott the US - just want to illustrate that its a matter of perspective.

What about all the good things China has done for its people - small matter of raising 400m people out of abject poverty in the space of 30 years or so - something no other country, agency, charity or movement has ever achieved.

I aint too fond of the US government either but nothing I buy is made in the US so I dont have to worry about that. Maybe I am over-reacting but sure just look in the papers recently and you'll see there is harsh words being said about Chinas human rights issues. Maybe none of you are aware of the stuff that goes on over in Tibet so go and have a read on it and see what you think.
