RDS Energy Lecture Series - The Future of Transport in Dublin

[broken link removed] Beginning in 2008, the RDS embarked on a series of lectures designed to address the whole question of energy conservation and climate change. These lectures are free of charge and open to the public. The next lecture in the RDS Energy Lecture Series will feature speaker Michael Phillips, Dublin City Engineer and Director of Traffic. The growth and future of public transport is the topic of this lecture.

The Dublin Region has grown and developed on a low density and wide commuter belt basis. This type of development was as a culmination of cultural experiences and free market enterprise. The introduction of Development and Transport Strategies has reversed this trend and in recent years it was recognised as being unsustainable particularly if Dublin is to continue to grow into the future.

Higher densities, greater use of public transport, walking, cycling and the public realm have to be planned and incorporated into the future development of Dublin. This new strategy of mobility will determine the ease with which people can interact within the city, the city and the region and between cities. It is a key consideration in determining the economic growth of the Dublin Region, achieving a work – life balance for people working in the region and has a significant impact on where people chose to live.
