Rats entering Septic tank

Last year while digging my garden, I noticed the "furry guys" congregating around the cover of my septic tank.
Under further inspection I noticed they had managed to burrow through the concrete block at the top of the tank and were happily traveling in and out, doing whatever rats do inside the tank. I re-plastered the hole using a mix of broken glass and cement. I have since noticed they have made a new entrance and are getting back in.
My questions are. will I leave them at it as there seems to be no way of stopping them or is there?
Can these blighters crawl up the pipes and into the house?

I have heard that they can make their way into a house.
Dont know if it is practical or would even work, could you get power out there via a lead, and use the ultrasonic unit to hunt them away. It would require cover from the weather etc. I dont even know if these units work, you could try it for a while.

I could possibly run a lead down and it might be an idea. I do have those units in a few rooms in the house and thank God, touch wood, we haven't had a problem indoors, even with mice so I guess they do work..

You could set baits, traps etc

I heard before they can get anywhere thats the size of a pen, as in that size circular. There was a thread on here not long ago where they were getting into a posters dishwasher..

i've heard (but never had to try it thank god !!) that the thing to do is buy "Storm" rat-poison, place it in a length of pipe (so that birds / pets can't get it) and tie the poison to the pipe using a length of string - it seems rats like to take the piece of poison back to their nest where they hoard it and keep coming back for more, - the string ensures they'll nibble it where it is.

You need a steel rat bait box.

Lift the lid place a nugget of storm on the metal spike inside. Close the lid and lock with an allen key. There is a small hole either side. The rat craws in and nibbles on the bait and leaves. Storm works quickly and rat usually dies in the nest.

I dont recomment using the pipe (4" sewer pipe) as the bait can find its way out to other animals and birds.

Thanks guys, and computerman, will I need to leave poison in this all the time because I live in country and will there be more furry guys come along and take their place??

I had rats in my garden, so I set a trap - well covered, killed three big rats and have not seen any for the last 12 months. Problem solved.

Periodicaly open the box and check the storm nugget, you will see if the rodents have been chewing it, if its gone or nearly gone just put another piece on the spike.
