Rats coming into house because of broken pipes

Hi I hope I have the right forum, we have noticed rat dropping under the kick board in the kitchen and in the attic, having heard them scurring around, the environmental health came out today and laid poison in the garden, they reckon the are coming in due to a broken swere pipe.

The manhole is in my neighbours garden and not in mine, does anyone know if SDCC will repair it or will a cost be incurred because the manhole in on the premises. Any advice or help would really be appreciated.

We had similar problem last summer.I was told to pull out dishwasher and check waste pipe that is situated right at the back.There was a gap where the rubber stopper goes into the floor it was never fitted correctly,I cemented the gap and problem sorted.DO YOU HAVE A DISHWASHER ??

You sure they are rats?
Did the env health folks say the rats are coming in via sewer pipes up the toilet and then into the kitchen? That's an odd rat run and no escape routes. How are they getting into attic? Find the entry points.
There could be rats in the sewer pipes externally for sure - where did they put the poison?
Is there a hole in the manhole?

If there are rats indoors, prob best to put out some rat traps rather than poison. Peanut butter works well. Poison is perfect for outdoors (Storm is good).

A broken sewer pipe has nothing to do with rats in your kitchen. The best way to deal with this is to do it yourself. You need to source the point of entry of the rats in your kitchen for starters. This may mean removing some of the units etc. You should easily see where they are coming in and out. Then block the hole with concrete. And plenty of it. Nothing else will do. they will knaw through most other things. Then fix the rats in your attic. start by walking round your house and checking that there are no holes /unfinished work where they may gain entry. Check that all the esb boxes etc has it's cover on properly. there should be no obvious way for the rats to enter into the cavity wall from the outside. Check around the downstairs toilets for unfinished work that might leave an opening. Check the outlet pipes for the washing machine, sinks, etc on both the inside and outside of the house. Add concrete round them to seal as neccessary.

Have a cup of tea. Wait a few days and check for signs of life......

I would agree with Birroc, are they rats or mice?. The Renkokil web site will give some tips of how to recognise the difference(droppings etc). Are you in a semi d, they might be accessing the attic from your neighbours. Forensically check around the outside of the house, rats or mice can get through the smallest of holes and seal them up. Hi yes i got environmental health out and they are rats, there are holes in the wall where the water pipe from the kitchen sink goes out, also behind the dish washer and washing machine i have cleaned them out and set traps within 15 minutes of setting the rat traps i heard it going off it caught a rat, but he managed to get, environmental health said they are no longer in the attic but have possible gotten up there throught the wall cavity, EH put poison in the attic and in the garden, i havent seen any signs since saturday, but they say if you see one there are at least 10 more around.

The rats have been in my neighbours either side of me also, but EH said the neighbours must ring them themselves to call out but neither neightbour has called.

Should i try SDCC again in a few days to check pipes ourside the house they never came out last week when they said they would.

If the cause is broken sewer pipes who would be responsible for getting them fixed ?

did you read my post regarding dishwasher ?? YOU MUST CEMENT ANY HOLES that appear around the waste pipe.put a few drops of chocolate sauce on the rat traps they cannot resist it.IF you cement all holes around waste pipe then i would not be concerned about external sewer pipes
