The best place for a rad is beneath a window, or alternatively on a (colder) external wall. This promotes better convection of the heat from the rad. If you locate the rad on a wall with no window you may get "pattern staining" on the wall surface overhead- however this can be avoided by locating a shelf just above the top of the radiator.
